There’s no doubt that as soon as Winter is over, we start craving the desire to travel. Well, for some of us, that’s year-round, but with the start of Spring, the travel bug hits hard. The colors of Spring start brightening our mood compared with the gray drab of winter, and the blooms remind us that everything starts fresh again, no matter how harsh the past has been. And, we start wanting to visit places where we can see the beauty of Spring flowers and new growth. With that in mind, let’s discuss the top five spring getaways that are perfect for you and your family! 

Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville, North Carolina boasts beautiful scenery around the year; however, there’s something about the bright green of new growth that draws the eye to the beautiful landscape of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Asheville. 

 

Traveling through the Blue Ridge Parkway is a great way to view the blossoms of springtime and enjoy the colors and fresh smell of Spring. Though the 469-mile parkway starts in Virginia, the headquarters and main visitor center are in Asheville, North Carolina. There, you’ll be able to learn about the history–both natural and cultural–of the Blue Ridge Parkway and set up an itinerary of things to do while traveling the parkway, which includes hiking, biking, and picnicking. And the best place in Asheville to see wildflowers in bloom is the Craggy Gardens along the Blue Ridge Parkway at marker 364.

 

And while in Asheville, you can’t miss visiting the historic Biltmore Estate whose beautiful gardens and grounds are in bloom. From April 1 - May 25, 2023, be sure to visit and check out the Biltmore Blooms. It’s the estate’s annual festival of flowers, and blooms will be all over the estate.

To see wildflowers in bloom, visitors to Sea Pines Forest Preserve can walk past the Warner W. Plahs Wildflower Field. A fan of golf? Hilton Head is known for that! It’s the number one golf destination in America. The lavender scents the air, so be sure to drive with the windows down! And if you’re there in June between the 9th and 11th, you can visit the Blanco Lavender Festival.

 

And if you’re looking for a place to stay, the Hill Country Herb Garden has 14 cottages amid their gardens (and it’s also a day spa!) to rest your head at night and smell the fragrant herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta, Georgia is a popular Spring getaway destination. Families flock to Atlanta in Spring for many different reasons, but one of those reasons includes the Atlanta Dogwood Festival that takes place each April. 

For eighty years, Atlanta has been celebrating the blooming of the Dogwoods, a native tree in Atlanta. The white blossoms draw a crowd to Piedmont Park. While celebrating the dogwoods, there’s no shortage of art, live music, and food at the Atlanta Dogwood Festival. You and your family will be able to participate in family-friendly activities as well as shopping with local vendors.

 

Looking for another way to celebrate the colors of Spring? Head on over to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens for a variety of beautiful spring flowers in bloom. While you’re there, visit the Orchid Daze. It lasts until April 9, 2023, and it features several murals by artists that are designed to enhance the natural beauty of the orchids in bloom. This flower exhibit may only last until April 9, but you can still the orchid collection anytime, which happens to be one of the largest collections in any public garden throughout the world! And not only does the Atlanta Botanical Gardens have orchids, but they also have other beautiful flowers on display, including tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, crocuses, and perennial bulbs.

This year, it takes place between April 26-29, 2023.  

 

And while you’re in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, you can go hiking, fishing, bicycling, horseback riding, visit waterfalls and other historic sites, and travel through Cades Cove, one of the most popular spots in the national park.
