Veeder-Root’s Humble Beginnings and Wartime Impact

Veeder-Root has been in business for over 150 years and has a small beginning story. It was created out of two companies: The Root Company, a hinges and counting equipment company that was started 1866, and the Veeder Company which was started around 1895 when Curtis Veeder made a new invention⸺the Cyclometer. The Cyclometer was used to record miles on a bicycle, giving most people their first measurement of how much distance they traveled.

By 1928, The Root Company and Veeder Company merged, creating Veeder-Root. It has become the largest manufacturer of counting and computing devices in the world. Today, products like voting machines, cash registers, and gasoline dispensers rely on Veeder-Root’s technology.

In 1942, Veeder-Root helped with the war effort. Their counters were used in WWII vehicles, providing critical information to soldiers with boots on the ground. And after the war, Veeder-Root created high speed counters, which were used in navigational equipment, radar and industrial scales.

Expansion and Growth after the War in Veeder-Root

The company continued to grow even after the war. Veeder-Root’s continued growth led to an expansion in 1956. The Veeder-Root manufactoring company was opened in Altoona, PA. And, by 1976, the 1,000,000th Gas Pump Computer was produced.

In 1981, Veeder-Root produced the TLS-250. The TLS-250 is an automatic tank gauge that had enhanced features to accurately detect leaks and to control inventory, proving that the company was determined to grow and expand and help their customers by providing new and helpful equipment.

And in the 2000s, Veeder-Root acquired a few more companies. In 2001, they acquired Red Jacket, which was a submersible pump manufacturer. In the following year, Gilbarco was acquired, and the Gilbarco Veeder-Root business segment was created. And in 2014, FuelQuest, a fuel management business, was acquired by Veeder-Root. The Insite360 (a leading global provider of fuel logistics software) business unit was created after that.
